  • "Neighbor to Neighbor: How to Support Okmulgee Families This Winter"

Dec 17, 2025

As we gather with friends and family this week, the true spirit of the holidays is often found in how we look out for one another.

This final article in our series focuses on how you can support our neighbors in Okmulgee County and ensures you have all the logistics—from trash schedules to city closures—ready for a stress-free holiday.

Community Spotlight: Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter

The drop in temperatures this week reminds us how vital our local services are. The Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter (OCHS) is currently seeing an increase in needs for their 30-day emergency program.

How to help right now:

  • Warmth Kits: Donations of new socks, heavy blankets, and winter coats are urgently needed.
  • Volunteer Your Time: If you have a few hours during the week after Christmas, the shelter is looking for help with organizing donations and answering phones.
  • Contact: You can reach them at 214 N. Morton or call 918-756-9098.

Deep Fork Community Action: Emergency Support

Many Okmulgee residents face tough choices between heating their homes and buying groceries in December.
Deep Fork Community Action provides emergency assistance for utility payments and prescriptions. A small monetary donation to their emergency fund can make a massive difference for a local family staying warm this winter.

Holiday Logistics: What You Need to Know

To avoid any holiday headaches, keep this Okmulgee holiday schedule handy for the week of December 25:

  • City & County Offices: Okmulgee City Hall, the Public Library, and County Offices will be closed on Wednesday, Dec 24, and Thursday, Dec 25.
  • Trash Pickup: Expect a one-day delay for residential trash services following Christmas Day. If your normal day is Thursday, your pickup will likely be Friday.
  • Mail Services: The Post Office will have limited hours on Christmas Eve and will be closed on Christmas Day.

Stay Safe on the Road

If you are traveling to visit family or heading out on our "Glow Tour" of regional lights, please remember to check the Oklahoma road conditions before you head out.
Keep a basic emergency kit in your car, including a blanket and a flashlight, just in case the Oklahoma weather decides to bring an early winter surprise.

From all of us at The Okmulgee Spot Light, we wish you a safe, warm, and very Merry Christmas!
